When his father turns off the screen for dinner, Liam screams and kicks the cabinet.

The Actionable Shift: His father realizes that transitioning abruptly from high-stimulation media to sitting at the table is too difficult. He introduces a new routine: “School bag unpacked, hands washed, then 20 minutes of tablet time with a visual timer.” He provides a 5-minute warning and sets out playdough on the kitchen counter. When the timer rings, Liam switches over to playdough neutrally, avoiding a meltdown.

Scenario 2: The Sneaky Bedtime Gamer

The Situation: Seven-year-old Sophie sneaks a handheld game console into her bedroom, playing past 9:30 PM and waking up exhausted and defiant for school.

The Actionable Shift: Her mother updates the family rules to include a “Central Kitchen Charging Dock.” All electronics—including parents’ phones—are plugged in downstairs by 7:30 PM. By keeping devices out of the bedroom and pairing the boundary with 20 minutes of reading physical books in warm lamp light, Sophie’s sleep cycle recovers within a week.

When to Seek Professional Support

In most homes, setting clear screen boundaries, using visual timers, and removing electronics from bedrooms resolves major media conflicts within two weeks. However, if your child exhibits extreme aggression during device transitions, persistent social withdrawal, or severe sleep disruption despite consistent routines, consulting your paediatrician or family physician is an important step.

When generic advice feels difficult to implement in your family’s daily life, having tailored guidance makes a meaningful difference.
